In 2002, the music industry was a very different place: pre-digital revolution, CD consumption was the norm, and vinyl was almost exclusively for DJs. Do Right Music was born as a vehicle to serve a niche audience of groove music listeners who wanted exciting new jazz, soul, funk and house music from Canada. 15 years later, we’re still doing what we love most - working with artists that we believe in and releasing quality music. Here’s our 15th Anniversary compilation, highlighting the next chapter of Do Right Music.
To kick off the EP, we have ‘Harmagedon’, a raw and heavy example of The Souljazz Orchestra doing what they’ve been doing best for the past decade - lyrical, cinematic horns and keyboard lines galore with a take no prisoners attitude. Up next is an early demo from The Soul Motivators - ‘Tito’s Revenge’ captures the unbridled energy of our favourite 9 piece funk brigade. Then we arrive at ‘White Nile’, a meditative piece from The Atlantis Jazz Ensemble, the spiritual jazz side project of The Souljazz Orchestra.
The second half of the EP is kicked off by a downtempo look at Alister Johnson’s beatmaking style, the futuristic and head nodding ‘Afterglow’. Next is California-based Elle Olsun’s enchanting 'Crying Over You'. Elle’s charismatic vocals guide the song effortlessly through disparate sections of hypnotic instrumentation. Closing out the collection, we have Brooklyn-based Jill Peacock with an uplifting bonus track from her self-titled EP. ‘Sunshine' has an infectious melody and a heavy dose of pop sensibility that comes with a good vibes guarantee!
